The first time I remember having a camera in my hand was a Kodak Instamatic 110 camera that I received from my father, and I still have pictures from that camera in an album. Looking back at those pictures, as well as ones that I have taken since then, the idea that a photograph captures not only a moment, but a feeling, an emotion, or an idea, is a very powerful concept that draws me to the medium.
I am fascinated by both the technical and artistic aspects of photography; about how the camera works, how light behaves, and how the technical magic behind the scenes come together to capture an instant of time. More than that, about how an image can become a link back to that moment; a gateway back in time. With this amazing artistic format, we can look at an image a year from now, or five, or twenty five, and have that image brings us back to that time. We may remember that moment, that emotion, the things that lead to the moment the image was captured or the things that have happened since.
While photography encompasses an enourmous array of speciaties, each with its own challenges and rewards, I have always loved photographing people. It all goes back to that first camera, taking pictures of my family and friends. That has carried on through my life, and I still find that taking pictures of the people around me is one of my favorite things to do. To be able to share that love is a honor, and to be able to apply what I have learned to capture those moments for others is truly a joy.
